Frequently Asked Questions
What are your rates?
My rates are based on the project. After an initial conversation to get an idea of your needs I draft a proposal outlining the scope of the work, the cost and time frame.
Who do you work for?
My style and business personality fit small businesses and professional service providers the best. This means anything from one-person startups, solo professionals, local businesses, and small companies. My ideal client is interested in growing their business or practice and understands the value of smart content marketing.
What industries do you write for?
Truthfully, a professional copywriter can write about anything. It’s a matter of researching your industry, learning about your audience and addressing their needs.
Do you offer retainer agreements?
Yes, a retainer agreement works well for a number of services I offer including e-newsletters, blog posts, and website updates.
I needed this yesterday – can you help?
Yesterday…no. Tomorrow…maybe. For rush jobs, it depends on the project, and my schedule. If it’s something small…probably. But for most projects…probably not. Please understand that I book work in advance (and trust me, you don’t want a writer/designer who’s free for a big project tomorrow). The best thing I can tell you is if you want your project done by a certain date, reach out to me and get on my schedule.
I already have something written – can you just touch it up?
Sure. I can take what you already have and finesse it into something that really works for you.
What “style” of writing do you do?
My style is clear, conversational, and engaging. Online it is important to use short words, short sentences and short paragraphs. It’s not the place to try to look smart with gargantuan words. (If you mean big, say big.)
The writing needs to be easy to read and digest. So I aim for a combination of professional, casual and plain English. Tone is determined by the client’s needs and business culture. For example two companies, both selling insurance, would need two different tones if one company requires suits every day and the other let’s employees wear shorts and bring pets to work. Same industry…very different tone.
Regarding my website – can you help me figure out what pages to have and the information I need to share?
Yes, this is something I do really well (it’s the organizational side of me). A great website flows well, is logical in scope, and encourages exploration. I can help you with content, navigation, and layout and then build the site in WordPress.
Does Dawn do all the writing and website design work?
Yes, you are hiring me, and me alone.
What if I don’t like what you write? Will you rewrite it?
Don’t like what I write? That never happens! Seriously though, editing and re-writing are a normal part of the writing process. So I include a free edit in the price if needed.
What are your payment terms?
A 50% deposit is due with a signed proposal to begin work. Final payment is due when the project is complete. For jobs $500 and under, I require pre-payment in full. I accept cash or check.
Someone else said they’ll do my writing or build my website cheaper. Will you match their price?
Sorry, but no, I won’t. If you want me, you have to pay my rate (and really, I’m not that expensive). This is an investment in your business that will reap rewards. If you are driven solely by price, hire the other writer/designer.
How long do you take to do a project?
That depends on the project. I can give you a time frame after our initial discussion and I will include it in the project proposal. But the project isn’t ultimately done until we are both happy with it.
Who owns the writing you do?
You do (once you pay for it). I may ask if I can use it as sample, but I will always check with you first.
Do you make websites?
Yes, I build websites using WordPress. To get started you will need a domain name, website hosting and theme. I can help you set all of that up. There are fees (but they’re inexpensive) for the domain name, hosting and premium themes, which are separate charges from my services.
Do you do graphic design?
No, I don’t do graphic design work. I think it is really cool, but success is about focusing on what you do well. For me (and for you) that’s the planning, organizing, writing, and website building.
So if I am creating your website I will need you to provide your logo, photos and any other visuals you would like included. If you need design elements created I can work with a graphic designer of your choice or I can source one and manage the entire process for you ensuring that the visuals support and enhance your message.
How do I update, edit and add content to my website once it is done?
There are a few options.
- You can hire me on a per project basis.
- We can set up a retainer agreement for new content to be written and added to your site (for example, blog posts) or any edits you may need.
- I also offer on-site training sessions (local clients only) where I teach you to be self-sufficient and update your site yourself.
I like this FAQ – can you make me one?
I think almost every sales or service website needs a FAQ. It’s a great way to anticipate and answer questions potential customers or clients may have. So yes, I can definitely do this for you too.
